Buying Guide for Roller Skate Trucks

What is a Truck?

The truck of a roller skate is the piece of metal that the wheel axle passes through. The trucks attach to the plate and hold the wheels. You can tighten or loosen the trucks tension nut to vary the amount of control you want in your pair of skates.

The average skater will have their trucks tightly fitted to the boot. Because of this fit, you should routinely check trucks to make sure they are tight and secure. Some roller skaters intentionally loosen their roller skate trucks to increase maneuverability. If that’s your style, you should also routinely check your skate trucks to make sure they haven’t loosened more than intended, and that both skates are equally loose. If you roller skate outdoors or on rough terrain you will need to check the tightness of your roller skate trucks more often.

Deciding how tight to tighten the truck is a personal choice. Make sure that they are tight enough so that they do not slip. Looser trucks are more flexible but harder to control at higher speeds.

How to Adjust Your Trucks

Inverted Kingpins: Simply use a 9/16” wrench to adjust the kingpin. To loosen the trucks, turn counterclockwise to tighten and turn clockwise. This permits the forward and rear wheel trucks to turn in the same direction creating a “reverse-action mode.” In return making your skates have a greater range of mobility.

Standard Kingpins: In order to adjust dual action trucks you must first loosen the lock nut. Use an 11/16” wrench to loosen the lock nut. Once the lock nut is loose, use a 9/16” wrench to adjust the tension on the kingpin. Turn counterclockwise to loosen and clockwise to tighten. Once the desired tension is achieved tighten the lock nut. This last step is very important. It stops the trucks from loosening quickly due to vibration.
