Roller Skating Fun for the Entire Family
In today’s fast-paced go-go-go world, finding time to spend outdoors is getting tougher and tougher every day. This includes the valuable time that you get to spend with your family. Well I'm here to tell you why roller skating is a great, inexpensive activity that you can do with your entire family, despite the shrinking amount of leisure time that you have. Unlike many other sports that are not conducive to entire families, or those that cost an arm-and-a-leg to participate in, roller skating can be enjoyed by many and at a relatively low cost too.
Keeping the costs of your recreational activities down is probably something that's relatively important to you. If so, you're going to love roller skating as a family activity. The largest investment that you will make when it comes to roller skating is the purchasing of your skates. If you're just planning on skating occasionally then your skate investment will be relatively low, probably falling in the range of $100 to $200. Roller skates for children can price out lower, so getting skates for the entire family will be less expensive than other sports activities that require more equipment. Notice that I say investment because that is truly what this should be. Roller skates can be something that will last a very long time with the proper care.
Of course you do not have to purchase roller skates if you plan on going to the local roller rink each time. Roller rinks will offer skate rentals for a minimal fee, but if you want skates that will fit properly each and every time, I recommend getting a pair for each member of your family. Also, if you do not invest in your own pair, you will have to go to the roller rink each time you want to skate. Admission costs will range between $3-$7 depending on the rink, but if you own your own skates you can take a quick trip around the block any time you want to.
Aside from the low cost, roller skating is just a fun activity for every one, regardless of age. It is super simple to learn and for kids it is a great way to improve balance and coordination. Toddlers can hold hands with adults to get the hang of it, and even grandma and grandpa can get in on the fun if they would like. If you've got a young one that isn't walking yet, you can even strap them into the stroller and push them on your skates.
Likely the most overlooked benefit to roller skating as a family activity is that it is something healthy for everyone. Over the course of 1 hour of roller skating you can burn approximately 300 calories, while also strengthening important muscles like your calves and ankles. Roller skating is a full-body cardiovascular workout that is easier and less strenuous than running or walking. It increases blood flow and strengthens heart muscles while doing minimal damage on joints. For children, it's a great way to get them off the couch, get them outside, and get them moving.
One final note on why roller skating is fun for the entire family, it cannot be effected by inclement weather. If it's a beautifully sunny day you can head outside if you'd like, but if the weather doesn't want to cooperate you can just head down to your local roller rink and spend the day skating indoors. The most important thing is spending valuable time with your family and keeping them healthy and happy. This can be easily accomplished with this fun activity all year round!
