Skating Across Canada for Charity and a World Record
By Chris Gorski
Inline skating is a great activity and when mixed with a great cause we at Inlineskates.com get super excited! There were smiles all around our offices when we learned of Kevin Ebra, better known as “skateman”, and his extraordinary journey for the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation. Skateman is skating 6,700 kilometers, just over 4,163 miles, to raise money and awareness to children’s cancer.
This latest journey amply named “Canada! The Land of Peace” is slated to take 120 days and will take Skateman from Toronto to Vancouver which will raise $200,000 for the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation. On top of raising money and awareness Skateman will get his name in the record books for the longest distance covered on inline skates. The journey started in Toronto, ON on July, 19th and will conclude on November, 18th when he reaches Vancouver, BC. We’d say that is one heck of a trip!
Kevin Ebra (Skateman) became a professional marathon inline skater in 2006 which has helped him condition and prepare for this epic journey as well as skating other long distances for the cause in the past. His first two long distance trips were in Iran in 2006 for a distance of 2,750 km and 4,000 km which he did to raise money for MS. Following up his two trips Skateman was at it again in 2007 logging 8,000 km’s in Iran to raise additional funds for MS. More recently Skateman has skated 450 km’s from Toronto to Ottawa in 2011 to raise funds for the victims of the Japanese Tsunami and logged an additional 6,500 km’s in Turkey in 2012. “I like travelling,” he said. “The people on the earth is a big family, everyone is my family.”
Not alone in his journey Skateman is accompanied by a two member support team, Nathan Walker and Ryan Childs-Elliot whom follows Skateman in the Skateman Mobile which is a van covered in signatures from skateman supporters. We at Inlineskates.com applaud the Skateman and look forward to hearing about more great journeys of his in the future!
Skateman also welcomes supporters to join him skating or biking for a few Kilometers of his journey. For more information and to follow along with the Skateman please visit Skateman.ca
