Skating in Movies: Part II
From throwing back to the old nostalgic 1970’s to themes centering on modern sports (as opposed to futuristic sports), roller skating still held strong in cinema through the 1990’s, past Y2K and into the new millennium. It didn’t rock the landscape like it did in the 1970’s and early 1980’s with movies like Xanadu and Rollerball, but it added a few new cult classics into the mix as well as a new kind of skate: the Inline Skate.
So as we enter the 1990’s and into the aughts we see movies about inline skating and roller skating with a few throwbacks to the golden age of skates.
Prayer of the Rollerboys (1990):
Set in the future, when the country has declined into violence, a pizza delivery man is used to infiltrate a trench-coating wearin’, inline skatin’ gang called the Rollerboys with a leader who pushes a drug called mist. Corey Haim stars as he is apt to do in this early-90’s movie.
What! You’ve never seen Airborne? This cult classic is about a young Californian forced to move to Ohio to live with his aunt and uncle. When he’s bullied at school (along with his cousin), he must prove his worth by skating against a rival school. Airborne stars Seth Green and is one of Jack Black’s early films.
Roll Bounce (2005):
A movie designed to showcase the 1970’s trick roller skating scene, this film is a cult favorite and features great roller skating moves set along to a sweet rink disco and groove soundtrack.
Whip It! (2009):
Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut centers on a young girl with no business being in the roller derby game getting into the competition. This roller derby cinematic experience stars: Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon and many, many more noteworthy names.
The following list of movies gets the honorable mentions for having memorable scenes and characters involving roller skates and inline skates but don’t necessarily have them as part of the plot.
Clerks (1993) – Who can forget the time Dante closed down the store to play inline hockey on the roof in Kevin Smith’s first film?
Boogie Nights (1997)– This Oscar-nominated film features the infamous character known as Roller Girl played by Heather Graham.
Austin Powers in Goldmember(2002) – The third film in the Austin Powers trilogy sends the spy back to 1975 and features a couple notable roller skating scenes.
