What’s Easier to Skate on? Roller Skates or Inline Skates?

First off, we need to get something straight here. Both Inline Skates and Roller Skates are fun!

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, which one is easier? The answer lies in what you intend to do with them. From hockey to figure skating to speeding along a trail in a park, there are benefits to both.

So, let’s break it down:

The Case for Inline Skates:

Inline Skater Having Fun

If you’re looking for speed then Inline Skates are the ones you want on your feet. Inline Skates utilize taller wheels in order to help gain and maintain speed (The exception being Aggressive Inline Skates). These also aide in stability once you get going.

Inline skates can also be easier to learn because they have a longer wheel base, extending a bit beyond the heel and toe of the foot. This gives the skater a more stable platform allowing them to absorb smaller bumps and cracks in the road which otherwise might make them lose their balance.

Another benefit to Inline Skates over Roller Skates is their smaller profile making it easier to dodge small obstacles and allow for objects that you hit to be pushed away rather than acting as a block.

The versatility of Inline Skates mean you can take them just about anywhere and get a lot of use out of them. Parks, terrain parks and sidewalks are great places for Inline Skates making them ideal for mobile people in urban settings.

In regards to sports, Inline Skates for the use of hockey are your best bet.

The Case for Roller Skates:

Roller Skating is Great Fun

Roller Skates really shine indoors. For uses on the rink and for making sharp, tight turns, you’ll find that Roller Skates are a great option. They aren’t as speedy as Inline Skates because of their wheel size but you’ll find a lot of stability which can help alleviate the fears of beginner skaters.

Roller Skates do have a downside though and that is they aren’t made for taking on objects. This is why they are best in an indoor/rink type setting where potholes, rocks and sticks all very rare.

In regards to sports, Roller Skates are the go-to options for Roller Derby and Figure Skating. Both indoor activities require a lot of versatility and mobility and the Roller Skate really delivers. Roller Derby is a fast-growing sport on the heels of a comeback. Roller Skates offer the side-to-side stability and ease of making tight turns and maneuvers which are critical to success in a Roller Derby tournament.

Figure Skating on Roller Skates as well as dancing is easier with the wheel set-up being under your foot as opposed to stretching outward.

Depending on how you want to skate will determine which type of skate is easier to use. So, what do you prefer? Inline Skates or Roller Skates?
